Out of Position Bluffs, Multiple Players

Sometimes it actually is easier to bluff multiple people than just a single online poker player at Everest Poker francais. While seeing a flop multiple ways means there are more things to be worried about, don’t forget that everyone else is worried too. As long as no one has hit the flop too hard, you can usually pick off some dead money using other players as leverage.

Someone stuck in the middle might want to call your bet, but is too scared to with another poker online player behind them left to act. They don’t want to just flat call a bet and risk getting raised again by a following player. Flat calling in between two active players is a risky thing to do, and likewise, it’s a good thing to pay attention to when you want to bluff at a pot.

Assume we’re in the small blind and get to limp into a pot. The flop comes out and we have missed completely. We check.

The big blind makes a little bet and the player who limped in calls that bet. With nothing, we can easily fold and give up on the hand. However, neither of these players is looking very strong. It’s very possible that the big blind is just making a stab at the pot and the following player doesn’t believe him. He could be flat calling with a hand or just floating in position, hoping the big blind will give up on the turn.

His flat call gives you a chance to bluff with leverage. Very much like a squeeze play, you’re hoping to pick up dead money. Maybe one player has a decent hand and the other was just bluffing. Chances are, neither of them want to call a big raise.

Remember to bet big, though, because now you have to get multiple players to fold and you don’t want anyone to think they’re getting a good price.

Gambling Money Should Be Fun Money

One of my pet peeves is when people funnel money from other areas of their budget into their poker fund. I am sure you have seen this happen to someone you know. Sometimes you can even hear them say things like “I guess I can spend a little less on groceries this month” or things in the same vein. Things like this make it crystal clear to anyone in listening range that this unfortunate fellow will betting money at the table that was allotted to other things. These kinds of statements make it very clear that this unfortunate person does not realize that gambling money should be fun money.

Poker should be spare money, or fun money, that will not affect your financial bottom line in another area. The very beauty of poker is the fact that it is unpredictable. This makes it fun, but hard to budget for. If you find that you are dipping into other areas of your life, then you need to seriously reconsider your bankroll. Try going down a stake or two so that you can afford your poker online habit using only extra money. If necessary, you can even switch to free rolls for a while. Whatever you do, just don’t use the household budget for the poker table.

European Wins the LA Poker Classic

The LA Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles has been won by Hungarian Andras Koroknai. He finished in first place to win $1,788,040 US in prize money plus a seat at the World Poker Tour Championship Main Event at the Commerce Casino.

Koroknai won his seat into the Classic through a satellite game. Beside Koroknai, the final online poker table featured Raymond Dolan of Fountain Valley, CA, Tri Huyuh of Vancouver, BC, Gevork (George) Kasabyan of Hollywood, CA, Jean-Claude Moussa of Toronto, ON, and Michael Kamran of Los Angeles. Koroknai was the chip leader right from the start and maintained that chip lead until the end.

Moussa and Kamran were eliminated early from the final online poker table. Eventually it went down to a three-way contest with Huynh, Dolan and Koroknai all vying to take the big prize. Koroknai was able to knock out Huynh when he held Ace-King vs. a pair of Jacks. The flop brought a King, and Koroknai was heads-up against Dolan.

The final hand had Koroknai with Q-8h going up against Dolan’s Q-4. The flop brought a 4, putting Koroknai at risk, along with two hearts. The river was the King of hearts, giving Koroknai the flush and the win.

The buy-in to the event was $10,000 US and there were 745 players for a prize pool of $7,156,290.

Must-flips for Tournament Life

I played in a rebuy poker online event on cake recently. I got off to a good start by catching pocket aces twice and playing them rather savvy. The event was very fast paced, as rebuy events normally tend to be. Players could not wait to get their online poker chips in. And as opposed to trying to see cheap flops and chase big draws, they were content to make huge raises preflop with hands like AJ and KQ suited. Every pot was large. My strategy in this tournament was to combat their aggression with passive play. I would limp into any poker hand I played. Sometimes, this would mean I would have to call a raise after I’d limped in with a hand like Kd-9d. In a rebuy format, hands like these can be invaluable. You’re trying to get in cheap if at all possible, but almost any multiway pot you can see for a reasonable price can pay in dividends. After the rebuy period was over, I was in the top 20 of about 200 players. I maintained my stack for a while, but without increasing much the other stacks started to catch up. The blinds were 300/600 with a 50 ante and I had about 17,000 chips, almost 30BBs. I looked down at QQ in early position and made a standard 3x opening raise to 1800. A following player with about 10,000 chips instantly moved all in. Action folded back around to me, it was about 8000 more to win 13,000 or so. If I was against AA or KK I was obviously in trouble, but I could also be against JJ, 10s, 9s AQ or AK. I easily made the call. Folding Queens here is way too tight. I didn’t have a monster chips stack where I could afford to sit on my haunches. The blinds and antes would soon be chopping my stack away. My opponent had AK off suit. The river made a 4-flush on the board and both of us had the flush, his to the K and mine to the Q. I was hurt very badly by this flip, but it was essential at this point in the game. There might be an argument to fold QQ at a different point in the tournament (around the bubble perhaps) or if I was in the top 10 in chips and didn’t want to take many preflop risks. Here, it was a must-flip.
