Glasgow Gives Green Light to Office Retail and Leisure Development

Outline plans have been approved for a £90 million office retail and leisure development in Glasgow. The new centre will include a six storey hotel and two office blocks. Developers will transform Broomielaw Quay; previously one of Glasgow’s most run down districts, situated within the city centre.

The new ‘Atlantic Square’ will replace the current International Financial Services District, where major companies have already provided 15,000 jobs since 2001. The original scheme was planned for a ten year period and more than £1 billion has already been invested.

The new centre, dubbed “Wall Street on The Clyde”, is expected to create 2500 new jobs. With careful attention to the office planning, the original faade of the existing 19th century warehouses in James Watt Street will be retained, spanning out into York Street. The tragic scene of a fire in 1968, when 22 factory workers died. Pedestrian access will be improved and a fabulous covered courtyard will act as the principal focus point for surrounding buildings.

Chief executive for the developers, the Capella Group, Jim Fitzsimons, believes the new centre will be a challenge, but is confident it will provide a huge boost for the city. Predicting office space will be taken up, despite the current downturn in the economy.

Fitzsimons believes the new ‘Atlantic Square‘ will become the commercial heart of the area. A place where everyone can work and relax. Millions have been invested into Broomeilaw, and it is already considered a success. The additional 227,000 sq feet of office space, which the new development will provide, is hoped to further expand this areas commercial profile.
