The NHS has set up a new website with the help of which patients can schedule appointments with their GPs, look at their medical files and even arrange for repeat prescriptions on the web. This service is being financed by Health Minister Edwina Hart.

The Mister has pledged £1.7 million to the website, which is still under production although several trials have been carried out in Swansea, Bridgend, Carmarthenshire and Anglesey. There is no word yet on when the website will start functioning, but it is expected to be accessible by the end of the year.

Since there is much need for online GP facilities, the NHS has initiated this service as it will provide the people with information which will in turn help them enhance their standard of healthy living, said Hart while talking about the website.

The Welsh secretary of the British Medical Association, Dr Richard Lewis said that providing patients with the right kind of information is an essential service and is one of the foremost steps in patient care. He said that the money used to fund the project will be highly useful in guaranteeing that the IT system in Wales gets improved.

Also, recently Philips announced that there have been tryouts conducted to check technology invented to take care of chronically ill patients at home. This will allow them to analyze their own blood pressure and blood oxygen levels and they would also be able to forward their health information to professionals at the Primary Health Trust through the internet.
